A Community-Led Initiative Towards Cleaner Water and a Healthier Environment

The restoration of the In-Situ Constructed Wetland at Sector 137, Noida has taken a significant step forward with the plantation of approximately 4,000 native saplings along the wetland banks. This initiative aims to strengthen the wetland's natural ability to improve water quality, enhance biodiversity, and create a sustainable green corridor along the Kondli Storm Water Drain.

Plantation for Ecological Restoration

The plantation drive includes a diverse mix of native and fruit-bearing species such as Mango, Jamun (Indian Black Plum), Lemon, Jackfruit, Bamboo, Pomegranate, and other indigenous trees. These species have been carefully selected to improve the ecological resilience of the wetland while providing long-term environmental benefits.

As these trees mature, they will:

  • Absorb excess nitrogen and phosphorus from stormwater runoff.

  • Help remove heavy metals and other pollutants through natural phytoremediation.

  • Stabilize the wetland banks and reduce soil erosion.

  • Improve groundwater recharge.

  • Increase biodiversity by providing habitat for birds, butterflies, and beneficial insects.

  • Improve air quality by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen.

  • Reduce the urban heat island effect by expanding green cover.

Future Strengthening Through Aeration

To further improve the treatment efficiency of urban wetlands, floating aerators similar to those installed at the Sector 50 Wetland are proposed for future deployment in suitable locations. Aerators increase dissolved oxygen levels in the water, enhancing the activity of beneficial microorganisms that naturally degrade organic pollutants. They also help reduce foul odours, improve aquatic ecosystem health, and support the long-term restoration of polluted water bodies.

A Collaborative Environmental Effort

The plantation drive has been made possible through the collective efforts of government departments, environmental professionals, corporate volunteers, and members of Volunteers137. Their dedication is helping transform the Sector 137 wetland into a thriving ecological asset for Noida.

The initiative also supports the broader objective of reducing pollution entering the Kondli Storm Water Drain and promoting sustainable urban water management through nature-based solutions.
